Kings maintained their remote chances of making the playoffs.
Fast bowler Hasan Ali finished with 4 for 15 as the Karachi Kings crushed the Quetta Gladiators on Wednesday to preserve their tenuous chances of making the Pakistan Super League playoffs.
Having won the toss and chosen to field, captain Shan Masood chose to bowl first, and Hasan changed pace to bowl Quetta out for the lowest score of the season, 118 in 19.1 overs.
Scoreboard
With almost four overs remaining, Karachi easily reached 121 for 3, with opening batsman Tim Siefert (49), who scored the highest of the innings.
With nine points from seven games, Quetta is still in the top two, while Karachi is in fifth place with six points from three victories and four losses.
When Jason Roy (15) top-edged the tall Zimbabwean fast bowler to Hasan at third man in the third over, Blessing Muzarabani (2-27) handed Karachi an early lead.
Then, when Quetta fell to 68 for 3 in the ninth over, Hasan struck twice in his opening over when Saud Shakeel (33) and Khawaja Nafay (17) holed out in the deep.
Sarfaraz Ahmed, the former captain of Quetta, had a poor season as he was run out for seven after attempting a tight single due to confusion with new captain Rilee Rossouw.
Only 22 runs had been scored in five innings by Sarfaraz, who lost his captaincy after Quetta failed to go past the league stage in each of the previous four seasons.
Amidst pace and spin in the middle overs, Rossouw was likewise unable to accelerate and eventually holed out during leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood's (2–25) comeback spell. After that, Hasan used his pace to rattle the bottom order and took two more wickets in his final over.
Masood's bad run of form persisted in his debut season as the captain of Karachi, on seven, against Mohammad Amir in the second over.
But mystery spinner Usman Tariq barely worried Karachi's overseas recruits Seifert and James Vince (27), who played fluently against pace. Sherfane Rutherford and Amir both dropped sitters in the outfield, demonstrating Quetta's wastefulness in the field.
After missing out on a half century and being stumped, Seifert blasted six fours and two sixes. Veteran Shoaib Malik then led Karachi to a decisive victory with an undefeated 27 off 20 balls.
