Babar is still hesitant to assume the role again and demands explanations from the board on particular matters before consenting to take up the captaincy again.
In advance of the 2024 T20 World Cup, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is getting ready to name Babar Azam captain again.
Cricket Pakistan claimed on March 12 that Shaheen Shah Afridi's T20I captaincy could be in jeopardy.
At first, Shaheen's replacement was expected to be Muhammad Rizwan, with Babar Azam also being considered. Babar is once again the front-runner for the captaincy, though, thanks to recent events. The PCB is almost done deciding whether or not to give him the position.
Following the 2023 World Cup, Babar Azam lost his position as white-ball captain, and Shaheen Afridi assumed leadership of the Twenty20 format. Following his removal from the T20I captaincy, Babar also tendered his resignation from red-ball leadership, which paved the way for Shan Masood to be named Test captain. Pakistan's performance was poor, as evidenced by their three Test series losses in Australia and their 1-4 T20I series loss in New Zealand.
The chairman of the PCB has now been replaced by Mohsin Naqvi, who took over from Zaka Ashraf. During his most recent Lahore press conference, Naqvi made a suggestion about a possible change in captaincy.
According to sources, Babar Azam is still reluctant to take on the captaincy after being removed from it previously because he was unhappy with how it was handled. He wants the board to reassure him about some things, and he won't accept to take the captaincy again until his worries are allayed.
In the meantime, Mohammad Amir and Imad Wasim have decided to come back into the national team, and they will probably be a part of Pakistan's Twenty20 International World Cup team. Babar Azam's possible reappointment raises concerns about his relationship with Imad, Amir, who has already chastised Babar for his T20I captaincy and batting on national television.
