Following the team's loss to Bangladesh, PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi defends the selection committee by saying, "If the coach or captain aren't playing some of them."
Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the PCB, supports the selection committee despite opposing hasty changes following a single subpar performance because there is a small pool of talent from which to choose players.
Chief executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, attributed the team's dismal performance to poor decisions made by the captain and coach. At Rawalpindi, Pakistan lost the first Test match against Bangladesh by a humiliating 10-wicket margin. Naqvi defended the selection committee in addition to blaming the team administration, captain Shan Masood, and head coach Jason Gillespie. He claimed that although the selection committee had chosen 17 players, Masood and the team management had remained with their starting lineup, which had performed appallingly in Rawalpindi.
"It is unfortunate that Bangladesh lost, but the team only had 17 players chosen by the selection committee. It is up to the coach or captain to decide whether or not to play some of them. Naqvi was quoted by ESPNCricinfo as saying, "The team management may have erred, but that has nothing to do with the selection committee."
Experienced campaigner Sarfaraz Ahmed warmed the benches while spinner Abrar Ahmed and Kamran Ghulam were removed from the team to play for Pakistan Shaheens.
Naqvi also discussed the challenges the selection committee encountered in selecting players from the nation's small pool of potential. Naqvi is optimistic that the One-Day Champions Cup, a forthcoming domestic tournament, will offer a solution to the ongoing issue.
"The selection committee's lack of a pool to choose players from is the issue. We need to fix our problems, which is why I brought up surgery. However, we lack reliable data and a player pool to draw from when attempting to solve them. It was a disorganized system overall. Great talent will emerge from the Champions Cup, and game records will be available. You need all the instruments to perform surgery," Naqvi continued.
Naqvi opposed to abrupt modifications
He also discussed the demands for immediate team changes following the defeat and the criticism and attention the team had received in the course of a single day.
"With this Cup, domestic cricket will gain strength. The 150-player pool will be used, and the selection committee will handle any necessary surgery. "Do it all today, cut the throats of four to five players, and get rid of them," was the advice given. The 45-year-old continued, "You can't fire someone until you have someone better to take their place.
The second Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh will begin on August 30 at the same location. In 1,294 days, Pakistan has not triumphed in a Test on home soil. In the World Test Championship (2023–25) standings, they are now rated eighth, whereas Bangladesh, fresh from their historic victory, are in sixth place.
